Anti Anthropocene, 2020
Anti-Anthropocene is my response to the current state of the ecological crisis. Anthropocene is described as a geological point in time (now) where human activity is directly impacting the land, causing world wide destruction of nature and species to become extinct at a higher rate that has ever been recorded in history.
Throughout my installation piece the viewers are presented with a combination of soundscapes and moving images. My aim was to create an immersive space for viewers to navigate through. Encouraging them to be viewing the videos from different angles and locations of the space, in hopes of provoking new perspectives of the land.
What I am aiming to do in my work is explore how alternative photographic processes could change the current representations that society communicates about nature. By using alternative photographic processes, I want to find out if I am able to create work that participates in the unlearning of the Anthropocentric view , creating an equilibrium between ourselves and nature. I feel as though my project is on the right trajectory to speak to the unlearning of the Anthropocentric view, and cause the viewers to question human importance over the land.
Due to the restraints of COVID-19 in the making of this work, exhibiting became another obstacle. I developed an online, virtual platform where the work could be viewed. Using the online database and interactive space ‘Mozilla Hubs’, I was able to place my work in an online space, where multiple people can view it together from any part of the world. The idea behind making this online aspect was to allow for my work to be shown more interactively online, as opposed to watching the videos by themselves.
